What Happens When You Have a Testosterone Imbalance?

Hormones are regulatory substances in your body that can influence your behavior and mood. For women, estrogen helps develop their reproductive systems. As for men, testosterone helps their body hair grow thick and promotes a higher sex drive.

Despite their importance, it is possible for a person to develop a hormone imbalance. This can happen as a result of a medication or a change in diet and daily activity.

But what happens to your body when you develop a testosterone imbalance? What are the warning signs?

Male Hormones for Bodily Function

Testosterone is the primary sex hormone for men. It regulates fertility and red blood cell production. It’s also responsible for the development of key physical traits that men are known for, such as thick body hair and high muscle mass.

Although both men and women have the same hormones, the levels of each of them vary between both gender and individuals.

Bodybuilders will often take extra testosterone and steroids in order to help them build muscle. Transgender men may also take hormonal supplements to correct their body’s appearance and development.

Female Hormones for Bodily Function

In a woman’s body, the primary sex hormones are estrogen and progesterone. Estrogen is mainly produced from the ovaries and is important for every step of a woman’s life. Progesterone is a steroid hormone that helps prepare the female body for pregnancy.

The levels of estrogen in a woman’s body can be affected by puberty, pregnancy, and menopause.

Warning Signs of Testosterone Imbalance

It’s completely normal for your hormone levels to fluctuate based on various factors in your life. Maybe you started taking a new medication, or perhaps you’re growing older. However, leaving a testosterone imbalance untreated can be hazardous for your health.

There are a few signs that your testosterone is low that you shouldn’t ignore.

For one, you’ll notice a lowered sex drive. Testosterone is responsible for high libido, so a decrease in it results in reduced interest in sex.

Testosterone imbalance may also result in mood swings. Men can find themselves more irritable and lacking focus. It’s a gradual change that can have a significant impact on your quality of life.

Bodybuilders know more than anyone what happens when you let your hormones get out of balance. Testosterone helps build and maintain muscle mass, but quitting supplements cold turkey can result in severe withdrawal symptoms.

Rebalance Your Body

Low testosterone levels in men can do much more than affect their sex life and emotion regulation. In some cases, it can result in decreased bone mass, memory problems, and hair loss.

If you’ve noticed any of these symptoms recently or suspect that you have a hormone imbalance, reach out to your primary physician as soon as you can.
